Vodafone Sustainability Actions

Reducing carbon emissions

Responsible energy use is a core part of Vodafone’s sustainability strategy. Since 2004 we’ve calculated how much energy we use annually and we publicly report on our carbon emissions. We share best practice approaches to carbon management with Vodafone Group operating companies. We work towards identifying, assessing and implementing carbon management and energy efficient initiatives. Some of these include: The installation of hundreds of energy ‘smart meters’ on our mobile network so we can better understand and manage our energy use Working with our network partners to install more efficient equipment and using innovative network site design to improve energy performance Installing passive fan-cooling systems to reduce reliance on energy-intensive air conditioners to keep our network equipment cool The installation of solar power on some of our network sites with the aim to increase our use of alternative energy sources where possible in the future

Reducing waste

Waste can end up in landfill, taking up space and giving off greenhouse gasses like methane. Less waste means we can do more for our customers and make better use of our natural resources. To achieve this we are: Tracking the amount and types of materials that we currently send to landfill, recycle and reuse. Reducing the amount of paper, plastics, metals and other materials used across our business. Switching to materials that can be easily recycled or that are biodegradable. Finding ways to recycle or reuse materials at the end of their life. Working with our suppliers, other companies and the government to find new ways of doing things. Disposing of certain hazardous materials - such as asbestos - in accordance with Australian environmental regulations.

Packaging

We’ve made a commitment to make our packaging more sustainable though our membership of the Australian Packaging Covenant. We redesigned our SIM packaging so it’s much smaller and when compared to our old packaging, the new format saves 50 tonnes of paper. We’re also recycling 14 tonnes of plastic before it even reaches our customers. They may be small, but when you consider the millions of SIMs that get produced each year it all adds up! Our SIM packaging is now printed on FSC certified paper, sourced from sustainably managed forests.
