Dedicated to improving sustainability in the bedding industry

The Comfort Group aims to be a global leader in ethical and environmentally friendly mattress production by 2030. Respect for people, communities, and the environment guides our practices. We prioritise abolishing modern slavery in supply chains, reducing environmental impact by minimising energy consumption, waste generation, and water usage. We adhere to local laws, the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We invest in sustainable solutions including innovative technology, equipment upgrades, and eco-friendly materials. This approach minimises our environmental footprint and results in products independently verified as ethical, environmentally friendly, and with minimal health impact. Examples include our Green Ribbon recognised CO2 foam, recycled polyester fiber made from plastic bottles, recycled foam underlays and biodegradable packaging. We partner with organizations like GECA and the Australian Bedding Stewardship Council, and actively participate in mattress recycling programs. As part of our commitment, we launched our first fully recyclable mattress in 2020 and our operations are regularly audited to help us improve our systems and processes, and minimise our environmental impact.

The Comfort Group Sustainability Actions

Soft Landing Mattress Recycling

As a founding partner of the Recycle My Mattress initiative and Soft Landing, The Comfort Group actively works on solutions to improve the environmental and social outcomes of the bedding industry in Australia. We saw an urgent need to help reduce the amount of mattresses that wind up in landfill, especially when the internal components may be recycled to create a wide range of new household products. Soft Landing can recycle up to 75% of internal mattress components, with steel springs becoming roof sheeting, foam becoming carpet underlay, and wood and husk becoming kindling, weed matting, mulch, acoustic paneling, and even animal bedding.

Sensitive Choice Partnership

Sensitive Choice helps millions of consumers worldwide live better with asthma and allergies. The National Asthma Council Australia created the program to help people identify products and services that are asthma and allergy aware, through the trusted blue butterfly. Dunlop Foams Ultra-Fresh treated chiropractic products, furniture, mattresses and baby nursery ranges are Sensitive Choice approved, as are our Fresh Protect treated premium flooring underlays.

Australian Bedding Stewardship Council Founding Member

The Australian Bedding Stewardship Council is a for-purpose organisation established in 2020 to deal with the issue of end of life mattresses. Australians dispose of 1.8 million mattresses every year. The bedding industry is working with ABSC to divert these away from landfill, and help to find innovative ways to reuse these materials.

The Comfort Group Sustainability Commitments

2010

Soft Landing Mattress Recycling

Since 2010, Soft Landing has been collecting and recycling old mattresses to help divert unnecessary waste from landfill, while recycling essential components to create new products and help create hundreds of jobs along the way. In fact, for every 35 mattresses that are collected and recycled by Soft Landing, they can create a job for someone who needs one. The Comfort Group has been there every step of the way, witnessing this unprecedented growth as a Founding Member and continued Product Stewardship member of the programme.

2018

Internal Training: Learning Edge

Investing in a more equitable future for our diverse workforce, The Comfort Group launched a training program aimed at upskilling factory staff & providing opportunities to study towards formal qualifications. This training gives long-serving staff a chance to learn the core skills that make them future ready and confident to embrace technology improvements we may implement in the future.

2018

Office Waste Reduction

In 2018, The Comfort Group removed all individual workstation bins in an effort to reduce office waste. The bins were replaced by small ‘Friendlypak’ mini desktop bins made from recycled cardboard and reusable plastic liners. Within weeks the landfill created within the office was reduced by up to 90%.
