Recycle My Mattress an ABSC Initiative

The Australian Bedding Stewardship Council (ABSC) is the independent authority for the bedding industry backed by industry leaders and government. Our mission is to reduce the environmental impact of our industry by working with manufacturers and their supply chains, retailers and recyclers.

One of the biggest issues facing the industry today (and the planet) is mattress waste. Over 1.8 million mattresses are discarded in Australia each year. Placed end-to-end, they would stretch from Darwin to the tip of Tasmania. Year after year, It's a problem that’s piling up. 

That's why we established ‘Recycle My Mattress’, a program that aims to keep mattresses out of landfill and off our streets, by making recycling easier for Australians. Facilitating responsible recycling of end-of-life (EOL) mattresses, we minimise the environmental, health and safety impacts.

Landfills all over the world are facing an overflow crisis, and due to their bulky nature, end of life mattresses are a key contributor. But it’s more than a matter of running out of room, we’re burying already rapidly dwindling non-renewable resources. As mattresses are slow to decompose, they have the potential to release an alarming volume of preventable carbon emissions. 

‘Recycle My Mattress’ was created to confront these issues. Our goal is to raise public awareness of the problems caused by irresponsible mattress disposal, and the benefits we can create if we act sustainably. By encouraging people to choose retailers and etailers who support ‘Recycle My Mattress’, they can rest easy knowing that when the time comes, their old mattress will be recycled in a sustainable and responsible manner. 

We believe with the right attitudes and innovation we can turn our unwanted mattresses into valuable resources for the future.
