Ford Sustainability Profile

Corporate Citizenship has been a part of Ford Motor Company Legacy since shortly after Henry Ford opened his business in 1903. Primarily, Henry Ford believed in lifelong education and demonstrated this by supporting schools that were built for his employees, and partnerships forged with learning institutions of his day. In addition to education, he supported the sustainability of our environment, promoted safety and assisted communities. Ford Australia supports Henry Ford’s vision of making people’s lives better by developing innovative programs to advance Community Life, Education and Safe Driving. The company is set to become the largest auto employer in the nation after 2017 and our commitment to community goes further than merely writing cheques. Rather we develop strategic partnerships and employee engagement opportunities that have a lasting, positive impact in local communities. Using Ford’s global Operation Better World model, we engage at a grassroots level to make strategic investments that meet community needs. We are committed to being a good corporate citizen and are especially committed to sustaining communities around our Geelong, Richmond and Campbellfield offices.

Energy Saving Mode

Energy Saving Mode (ESM) is a new mode of operation for the paint shop ventilation system. When ESM ventilation system operates at 20% of the normal rated capacity, this is suffi cient to enable spray booths to maintain full pressurization, during non production times.ESM slows and smoothly reduces supply and exhaust airfl ow during non-production (and non-cleaning) periods. Booth pressurization is maintained at all times during fl ow ramp down, minimum fl ow and fl ow ramp-up. Changes in fl ow rate are slow and smooth, preventing dirt being loosened and blown into the booth. ESM has been implemented which has helped to reduced our overall total usage consumption throughout the paint operation.

Waste Management

Ford Australia is aiming to halve the amount of paint sludge disposed to landfi ll. Working in conjunction with Australian waste specialist Geocycle, the paint sludge from Ford’s Broadmeadows facility is being used as an alternative source of fuel in the cement making process. The fi rst shipment of sludge went to Geocycle’s processing facility in Dandenong, Melbourne in August 2011 and shipments of around 10 tonnes a month continue to leave the Ford site.

Water Management

In 2011, Ford Geelong installed a new cooling system in their compressor house that uses 80% less water than conventional evaporative cooling towers, a saving of up to 50,000 litres of
